This painting was inspired by a photo I took on a night hike at Castle Gardens in Salida Colorado in December. The moon was full and the light and shadows were dramatic. I didn’t sketch the horse out at all, just painted it in and developed the form and definition. The snowy background came together well, I repainted the clouds over as I felt the first version was too bright. I stuck with a cool teal blue tone in all the colors of this painting, even the yellow has a blue undertone to it.

I love the detail and the muscle structure in the horse!
