Jingles, oil on canvas

I named this painting “Jingles” as it’s holiday themed and was completed while I am dealing with an ailment that rhymes with it. I didn’t use any actual reference material for this horse, was inspired by a horse illustration on a book cover. The canvas is 12″ x 16″. As with most of the art on my website, this painting is for sale.

Gold Akhal Teke

“Gold Akhal-Teke” oil on canvas, 36” x 24”. I’ve wanted to paint this horse breed for a while! They are exceptionally muscular horses with small skulls and gold fur. I love to paint in gold, it really shimmers and reflects light in the day, the acid greens and yellows glow at night.

Cheekwood Iris

This 12″ x 16″ oil on canvas was painted from a photograph I took on my birthday at Cheekwood Botanic Gardens in Nashville, TN. It was a beautiful deep purple iris that was shifting around in the breeze, was a gorgeous warm sunny day. I knew I wanted to paint this flower as soon as I saw it! My technique was a bit different with this piece, it was mostly painted in one day and finished the second day after adding a lot more color to the iris flower. I used a lot more medium with this one, the paint was applied very thinly. I am very proud of it!

Blackjack

This little oil on wood block painting is tiny at just 5″ x 5″. I started it last year, called it done, put it away, had some extra paint one day and decided to rework it into this little painting that I now adore! I never used any reference materials when painting this one, it wasn’t planned at all, it evolved spontaneously.

Bouquet II

Bouquet II, oil on canvas, 12″ x 24″. I did a quick gesture on canvas in pencil based on a real life bouquet. This is my third flower with black background study and I love the way the colors pop! I took my time with this one, started it back on April 10th, went on a birthday vacation, worked on it some more, went on another vacation and finished it up within a few days after returning. I devoted myself to one flower at a time, as each flower was dramatically different and each had different challenges whether it was the shapes, texture, or the colors.

Tulips

Tulips, oil on canvas, 12″ x 24″. I did a quick gesture on canvas in pencil, built up the dark and bright colors and from there this one developed nicely. It took a bit longer than usual, life commitments pulled me away for a couple of days, the tulips were falling apart when I finished it up. Thankfully it was mostly done, just needed to add a few finishing touches.

Bouquet, oil on canvas

This oil painting is from life of a beautiful bouquet of flowers I was given. It’s 9″x 12″ and started out with a quick pencil gesture on canvas, then I painted in the dark and light undertones. The color palette started out as light pastels and evolved into bolder more radiant colors. It’s a good thing I finished this painting in a couple of days because the flowers were wilting fast.

Yellow Mare oil on canvas

This painting was inspired by a photo I took on a night hike at Castle Gardens in Salida Colorado in December. The moon was full and the light and shadows were dramatic. I didn’t sketch the horse out at all, just painted it in and developed the form and definition. The snowy background came together well, I repainted the clouds over as I felt the first version was too bright. I stuck with a cool teal blue tone in all the colors of this painting, even the yellow has a blue undertone to it.

Roller Derby Ruby oil painting

This oil painting was inspired by the work of Japanese artist Rockin Jelly Bean, is 9″ x 12″ oil on canvas. I sketched it out in pencil on the canvas and then began to paint with my small and medium brushes. I had a lot of fun painting this one, especially the hair. Everything really came together when I made the choice to do the background in gold which really makes all the color pop!
